College Prep Timeline

for-students28th GRADE

  • Learn how to budget your time using a daily, weekly and monthly calendar.
  • Practice setting goals and reaching it.
  • Talk to someone you look up to about developing good study habits
  • Volunteer in your local community (i.e. church, non-profit organizations, fundraising events)
  • Develop a high school class plan and discuss it with your guidance counselor.
  • Discuss with your parents about how to pay for college.
  • Ask a high school student for any advice he/she can give you.

9th GRADE

  • Enroll into the College Planning of America Program by completing the enrollment form on-line.
  • Take an interest, skills and work values assessment to help you explore your college and career options.
  • Review the CPA Student College Planning Workbook
  • Register for your 9th grade classes by taking the most difficult classes you can handle.
  • Stay focused on your homework assignments and make a great effort in completing it ahead of time.
  • Meet with your each of your teacher for guidance and advice.
  • Discuss with your high school guidance counselor about your college career plan.
  • Get involved with your school’s extracurricular activities.
  • Discuss with your parents about how to pay for college.

10th GRADE

  • Stay focused on your homework assignments and make a great effort in completing it ahead of time.

  • Discuss with your high school guidance counselor about your college career plan.
  • Get involved with your school’s extracurricular activities.
  • Make an effort to hold a position in a club or organization.
  • Register and take the PSAT/The PLAN exam.
  • Take summer classes to get ahead and ease off some heavy load classes in your junior year.
  • Apply for a summer job or internship to gain some work, people skills experience and save money for college.

11th GRADE

  • Enroll into the College Planning of America Program by completing the enrollment form on-line.
  • Take an interest, skills and work values assessment to help you explore your college and career options.
  • Review the CPA Student College Planning Workbook
  • Sign up for classes that will earn college credit through the Advanced Placement, College in the Schools (CIS) or Postsecondary Enrollment Options.
  • Stay focused on your homework assignments and make a great effort in completing it ahead of time.
  • Meet with your each of your teacher for guidance and advice.
  • Discuss with your high school guidance counselor about your college career plan.
  • Get involved with your school’s extracurricular activities.
  • Make an effort to hold a position in a club or organization.
  • Register and take the SAT/ACT exam.
  • Attend a college fair event.
  • Apply for a summer job or internship to gain some work, people skills experience and save money for college.
  • Take summer classes to get ahead and ease off some heavy load classes in your senior year.
  • Visit a few college campuses.

12th GRADE

  • Enroll into the College Planning of America Program by completing the enrollment form on-line.
  • Take an interest, skills and work values assessment to help you explore your college and career options.

  • Sign up for classes that will earn college credit through the Advanced Placement, College in the Schools (CIS) or Postsecondary Enrollment Options.
  • Stay focused on your homework assignments and make a great effort in completing it ahead of time.
  • Meet with your each of your teacher for guidance and advice.
  • Discuss with your high school guidance counselor about your college career plan.
  • Get involved with your school’s extracurricular activities.
  • Make an effort to hold a position in a club or organization.
  • Register and take the SAT/ACT exam.
  • Attend a college fair event.
  • Develop your portfolio/resume for your academic, athletic, work activities and achievements.
  • Request for Letters of Recommendations from your teachers, guidance counselor, principal or someone you look up to who can comment on your abilities and talents.
  • Attend a financial aid event
  • Apply for scholarships provided by your CPA Coach. Be sure to have your CPA Coach review it before submitting it.
  • Apply to 6-8 colleges and universities.
  • Apply for financial aid by completing the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1st. Be sure to get your parent’s previous year’s income tax information as well as have your CPA Coach review your FAFSA before submitting it.
  • Have your CPA Coach review the SAR for accuracy.
  • Send your acceptance letter to the college of your choice.
  • Send your high school transcripts to the colleges to which you’ve applied.
  • Notify the other colleges you applied to in writing to inform them that you don’t plan to attend their school.
  • Apply for a summer job or internship to gain some work, people skills experience and save money for college.
  • Review the college orientation materials.
  • If living on campus, be sure to contact your roommate(s) and check with your college for the student college handbook.
