We’ll probably pick them up again in a few years (though I read them myself, and they’re some of my all-time favorite fiction books). Younger chapter books range anywhere from 1500-6,000 words while older chapter books can go up to 15,000 words dancing on the edge and crossing over the line into the middle grade. The worksheets have 5 word study multiple choice questions, yes or no comprehension questions, fill in the blank, character study, and a prediction question. There are plenty of characters, from Atticus to Dolphus Raymond, from Miss Maudie to Boo Radley, who do not conform to any stereotype. I meet fifth graders every week who describe a character in a book at level U as “nice.” To me, that’s level K work in a level U text. The term "high interest, low vocabulary" is often used to describe books for youngsters like Charles.

Dinosaurs (Deschutes PL, OR): Picture Books, Easy Readers, Bridging Fiction, and Fiction. This week I listed the books in roughly in order of the target age of the reader, starting with youngest to oldest. These are short chapter books and go quickly for kids with less than stellar attention spans. They have real emotions which I think most 3rd graders appreciate. They checked his pulse, did other things; he did not understand at all.
